A Novel Laparoscopic Port Closure Device
Summary
In my undergraduate senior year, my Biomedical Engineering Design team developed an innovative laparoscopic port closure device that addressed postoperative intestinal herniation by efficiently closing laparoscopic port sites. This device employed anchored needle guides and a rotator bearing for a double cross-stitch mechanism, which improves resistance to postoperative complications while improving ease of use for surgeons.
Awards
Our group received two awards - the senior Biomedical Engineering Design award and second place in the Sigma Xi poster competition
Future Goals
We hope to continue to iterate this project to improve efficacy and ease of use as a team
